Green gas is the sustainable variant of natural gas. Green gas is made from biogas that is created by fermenting vegetable and animal (residual) material. During production 'biogas' is released. This is collected and used, among other things, to make green gas, a sustainable and clean energy for driving. TotalEnergies is the largest supplier of green gas to road traffic and is working hard to further expand the number of petrol stations.

Advantages of green gas (CNG)

  • Running on green gas emits up to 80% less CO 2  than fossil fuels and reduces nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM 10 ) emissions .
  • Vehicles running on green gas are very quiet
  • Green gas is an economical energy for transport

Production of green gas

Examples of the vegetable and animal (residual) material from which green gas is produced are green and pruning waste, sewage sludge and manure. This material has  absorbed CO 2 during growth , which is converted into methane (CH 4 ) during the fermentation process . During the fermentation process, gas is created that we call 'biogas'. Because the biogas is collected in the digester and therefore does not enter the atmosphere, its formation has no harmful effects on the climate and therefore does not contribute to global warming. The resulting biogas is then upgraded to 'natural gas quality'. For example, it can be added to the natural gas network and you can easily refuel it at a gas station.

Refuel with green gas

Green gas is suitable for transport, companies and passenger cars. You can refuel at a large number of TotalEnergies green gas filling stations. Petrol stations that carry the brand name 'PitPoint clean fuels' are also part of the TotalEnergies network. Refueling is largely the same as you are used to: connect the filling hose to your vehicle, squeeze the lever and the tank will fill up. Depending on the size of the tank and the type of vehicle, you can drive 600 to 1000 kilometers.
The  station locator  shows all TotalEnergies filling stations in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and France. Select 'CNG' in the Fuel filter and you will find the network where this fuel can be refueled. For more information about green gas refueling with the TOTAL Fuel Card, click here.

Good for the environment

The production of green gas has no harmful effects on the climate and is a good choice for air quality. Nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM 10 ) emissions are considerably lower than with fossil fuels. As a result, the health damage is up to 30% less than the current European emission standard (Euro VI) for vehicles.

Difference between green gas and CNG

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas, or in other words: natural gas under pressure. You can see natural gas as the precursor to green gas. CNG from natural gas is a (cleaner) fossil fuel: it emits less particulate matter, NOx and CO 2  than traditional fuels. Although green gas has the same composition as CNG, the origin of green gas is renewable and provides a greater reduction in CO 2 . In contrast to CNG from natural gas, green gas is therefore no longer a fossil fuel and therefore better for the environment.
