What is Hydrogen

Hydrogen ( H 2 ) is an invisible gas, lighter than air and quickly bonds with other substances. The combination of hydrogen with oxygen is also known as H 2 O , or water. Hydrogen hardly exists in its pure form. Hydrogen is a residual product in some chemical processes. However, it is produced more often. Among other things, by electrolysis or steam methane reforming (SMR). 

Produce hydrogen

Hydrogen is not an energy source but an energy carrier. Hydrogen must be produced for this purpose. This is done by means of electrolysis or steam methane reforming.

In electrolysis, water is split by electricity into hydrogen ( H 2 ) and oxygen ( O 2 ). In steam methane reforming (SMR), natural gas or green gas ( CH 4 ) is 'cracked' using heat. Hydrogen ( H 2 ) is released during this process.

Hydrogen can be produced on site, for example next to the filling station. It can also be centrally produced on a large scale. It is then transported to its destination by so-called tube trailers or by pipeline.

An important advantage of driving on hydrogen is that no harmful substances are released while driving. The only thing that comes out of the exhaust of a hydrogen car is water. Nothing else.
